Presidential hopeful almost in top 5 per cent of US income earners, tax return shows

US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, who has made income inequality a top campaign theme, had taxable income of $US205,271 ($265,775) in 2014, putting him almost in the top 5 per cent of United States earners, according to the release of his federal tax return.

Mr Sanders on Thursday described himself as "one of the poorer members of the United States Senate".
